Compromise? Between Pro-life and Pro-choice?
My stance on the abortion topic is pro-life. I myself am a Christian that believes that life begins at conception. Also, I was adopted at birth, and I happen to know that my biological mother was an un-wed teenager when I was born. In an ideal world created by me, every type of abortion would be illegal. However, in reality today, abortion becoming illegal is highly improbable. This is because the pro-life stance is not based on logic or facts, it is based on faith. The idea that life does begin at conception is not scientifically proven, and therefore it is merely a belief/opinion that pro-life supporters hold. Ideally there is only one thing a pro-life supporter can hope for. This is a reduction of the number of abortions per year. Currently pro-life and pro-choice supporters have polar opposite viewpoints and arguments about abortion. My blog is going to discuss how supporters from both groups can come to a common ground about abortion or pregnancy related policies to try and reduce the number of abortions that occur. By looking at policies related to contraceptives, and the different types of abortions that are allowed to occur, these two groups can possibly compromise. Also, if we research the economic background of an average woman receiving an abortion, we may find that we can help pinpoint the motive behind taking such action. If we do this we can try to address the individual's situation so that abortion may not be as strongly considered.

I admire your stance for compromise on abortion, but what comes to mind when I think of pro-life people are religious fanatics and these people (http://cache.jezebel.com/assets/resources/2007/12/prolife122907.jpg) and they don't seem very fond of compromising. I do not think groups so vastly opposed on such a sensitive subject could ever compromise.
ReplyDeleteThey don't have to compromise on a religious or even moral level for that matter. However, it's likely that they can agree on trying to reduce the number of abortions that occur. When it comes down to it, pro-choice supporters aren't advocating for the number of abortions to rise. They aren't protesting that all women should get abortions. They just view it as a service that's available to women that want it.
ReplyDeleteOff the back, I must admit that I am personally pro-choice, not because I believe that women should be able to use abortion as some sort of a birth control, but because of all of the other possible scenarios that may occur where having an abortion may be the choice that will not negatively impact a woman's life. I do believe that it would be beneficial to create a compromise between the pro-life and pro-choice activists, and there are many scenarios that we must keep in mind in order to come to a logical compromise. For instance, imagine if a woman was raped and because of this incident she was to become pregnant. In a world where abortion is illegal, the woman would be forced to keep the child, the child of a rapist. Imagine if she were to have a boy that looked exactly like her rapist, how do you think she would treat him? Horribly, right? Even if it is subconsciously, the child will more than likely have a traumatic childhood, leading to a traumatic adulthood, that will lead to THEIR child's traumatic childhood, and the cycle continues.
ReplyDeleteThe only problem with creating a compromise is that it will almost be impossible to include EVERY SINGLE POSSIBLE scenario. With all of that said, would it be simpler to just allow all women to have the right to choose?
I understand the pro-choice argument that abortions should be allowed in rape and incest cases. Personally, I do not believe that abortion should be considered in any circumstance. However, I do believe that the pro-choice supporters have a legitimate argument on that topic. I would personally be willing to compromise and allow that those scenarios be the only criteria for having abortions.
ReplyDeleteHowever, my argument in this blog is not particularly going to be focused on the types of abortion that should or should not be allowed. It will most likely be mentioned, but that will not be my blog's main focus. My focus will mainly be on how pro-life and pro-choice supporters can take their ideals and compromise to help reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies and thus abortions. Also, together the two groups can try to figure out a way to change a woman's situation/perspective so that she may want to keep the child or put it up for adoption.
As contradicting as it may sound, I am a catholic pro-choice believer. Even though I grew up in a catholic community, I believe that every women should have the option of deciding for herself what she wants to do with her body. Under no circumstance should the government intervene with the human rights of women. In cases of rape, unexpected pregnancies, and even teenage pregnancies, abortion is the only way out. Therefore, I believe that the choice of whether or not to have an abortion should solely be made by the expecting mother and father.
ReplyDeleteAs I have previously said, I do believe that the pro-choice supporters have a legitamite argument about rape and incest cases. Those cases would be cases that the pro-life supporters would have to support in order to make other abortions illegal. However, like Wartime Communities said, being able to include every possible scenario when determining which abortions shouldn't be legal. Personally, I believe that the unborn child has just as many rights as the woman does. However, that would be getting into morals and ethics and that's not what I'm tryign to do in my blog. I simply want to propose the idea of a compromise to increase the number of abortions, not make it illegal.
